Why lossless matters for your samples
MP3s are fine for listening and bad for sampling. What lossy compression removes, why it adds up in a mix, and how FLAC saves space without losing a bit.

A 320 kbps MP3 sounds close to the original on playback. The trouble starts when you use it as a sample. Lossy formats throw away what they predict you won’t hear, and that prediction assumes you’ll listen to the file as it is, not pitch it down an octave, stretch it, or stack it under twelve other layers.
What gets lost
- Detail above 16 to 19 kHz, which comes back as dullness when you pitch down
- Pre-echo, a faint smear before sharp transients that becomes audible on processed drums
- Stereo detail, since joint stereo encoding simplifies the side channel
Each artifact is small. In a mix of forty tracks where half the samples started life as MP3s, they stop being small.
Lossless doesn’t mean huge
WAV and AIFF store audio uncompressed. FLAC compresses it the way a zip compresses a document: the file shrinks, and decoding it returns exactly the same samples, bit for bit. Drum one-shots typically shrink by 50 to 60%, and full mixes by 30 to 40%.
